Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) chairperson Flora Mutahi has been appointed to the board of the United Nations Global Compact.

It is an initiative that encourages businesses globally to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies.

UN Global Compact chief executive and executive director Lise Kingo has said the new board will be chaired by UN Secretary- General Antonio Guterres, with two vice-chairs.

“This new board is the most diverse and streamlined that the UN Global Compact has ever had, with members representing business from all over the world alongside civil society and other stakeholders,” said Ms Kingo.

“Together, they will help guide the strategic direction of the UN Global Compact as we work to mobilise a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders to create the world we want,” she said.

Ms Mutahi termed the appointed as an honour.

“I look forward to championing responsible business practices in Kenya and the wider Africa through the integration of the UN Global Compact principles in business as well as the implementation of the sustainable goals to achieve Vision 2030 and Agenda 2063,” said Ms Mutahi in a statement.

Ms Mutahi, the first female chairperson of KAM since its inception 57 years ago, is also serving on several boards both in the private and public sectors.

She is also the patron of the Women in Manufacturing Caucus – a mentorship and networking platform aimed at increasing the participation of women in the manufacturing sector.

Ms Mutahi is the founder and chief executive of Melvin Marsh International, a company that manufacturers flavoured tea blends, salt and rice products under the brand name – Melvins.

She has local and international experience in strategic leadership, business development, market penetration and marketing. She also has interest in real estate.

The UN Global Compact board plays an important role in shaping the strategy and policy of the initiative, which acts as the United Nations flagship for responsible business action.

Designed as a multi-stakeholder body, the board provides ongoing strategic and policy advice for the initiative.
